Bremerton’s first zine fest celebrates DIY creativity

“Because everything is so digitized and online, having a piece of art that you can take with you and that is physical … there’s something special about something that someone poured their heart into,” Gray said. “And the zine culture is very much welcoming and inclusive and it’s less about making money and more about passion.” The festival was a buy-sell-trade event, she added. Kitsap Gets A Zinefest: Local Artist Dani Gray Says ‘Why Not,’ Sets Out To Build A Small Press Festival

What drives my passion for zines is that they are rad,” says Gray, who met Moriarity at a local art show when she purchased one of his ‘Zine Machine’ prints. “I have a huge collection of zines that range from super heavy and political stuff to ‘My Favorite Kind Of Mustard.’ There’s a full range. Bremerton Zine Fest 2023 @ Evergreen Rotary Park

The Puget Sound area is a hotbed of zine activity, from the legacy of the (now defunct) Zine Archive and Publishing Project in Seattle to the long history of zines made by DIY punks in Olympia. And later this August, Seattle zine enthusiasts can take the hour-long ferry to Bremerton for the city’s new zine and small press fest.

For the uninitiated, zines (pronounced “zeen”) are limited-run, self-published booklets, pamphlets, or comic books usually printed by photocopier about literally any topic—music, politics, feminism, memoir, skillsharing, etc. They subvert the commercial system and are a way to connect with the people and communities around us.

On August 26th, Seattle zine enthusiasts can take the ferry to Bremerton for the city’s first annual zine and small press fest. Hosted at Evergreen Rotary Park, Bremerton Zine Fest showcases 35 participating artists. The festivities kick off at 11 am with an introduction by Mayor Greg Wheeler followed by a reading by Bremerton’s Poet Laureate Tia Hudson at 1 pm.

Don’t miss the featured artist of the afternoon: Pat Moriarity, a punk rocker-turned-comic artist whose freaky, energetic illustrations appeared in The Stranger, Sub Pop, Columbia Récords, Nickelodeon, and earned him accolades from Rolling Stone.
